I’ll Never Be Her

Thought in the Crossfire

I kept waiting. Waiting to grow at least 4 more inches, waiting for my stomach to smooth, waiting to grow into an elegant female instead of a disproportionate girl.

So when, at 22, I suddenly caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, several realizations toppled down onto me all at once: I was done growing (10 years past done, actually) and didn’t look a thing like the drop-dead gorgeous beauty I’d always imagined as a little girl. I still look like an awkward 12-year old.  I crumpled to the floor. It’s never going to happen. The realization sunk into my gut like a lead cannon ball. And it hasn’t really left since, to be honest, even nearly 2 years later.

Idolatry at its finest masks itself as pain with a remedy that feeds one’s pride. Low self-esteem is the diagnosis of the day. That label in itself is…

Mysteries Of The Bible: Why Does God Love Those Who Are Despised?

Edge Induced Cohesion

Continuing in the series of mysteries of the Bible [1], I would like to examine one of the most striking aspects of God’s character as it relates to the Bible, and examine what it means for us in terms of application. God’s love for people, even people who are hostile to Him and enemies to Him, is nearly universally known and believed, whether someone is living a godly life or not. Regularly signs in sporting events will quote John 3:16, which, of course, reads: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Even the most unsophisticated among us when it comes to understanding theology has some intellectual understanding that God claims to be love and to have love for ordinary human beings like ourselves. Why am I on earth?

Last week, I got older. Yes, it was my birthday. I asked myself, “Why am I on earth?; who is celebrating me, celebrating that I am on earth?; Why should I celebrate?” And I got my answers.

Ephesians 1 proclaims, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.” (Ephesians 1:3-6 ESV)

Why am I on earth? Because God chose me, planned my coming and made it happen.

Who is celebrating my birthday? God. He wanted me and made me His.

Why should I celebrate? I am chosen and blessed, and life is worth living.

Be blessed.
